December 21, 1960

I remember the date and year well; it was a Wednesday. English class with Mrs. Lawton. She had asked me to go into the closet and bring out two cases of new books she would be handing out to all the students. No big deal, right? Right.

I no sooner went inside, than a girl rushed in after I did and said my name. When I turned around, she held a sprig of mistletoe over my head and quickly kissed me on the lips. She pulled back and said, "I really like you." Then she ran out of the closet.

I was so taken aback, I walked out without the books, where Mrs. Lawton asked me what was wrong, and why was I smiling so much. I then remembered to go back and get the books.

It was my first kiss from a girl. Her name was Carol. And I'm smiling now just at the thought. Days past, days remembered.

Man, it was a good time to be young then.

Mistletoe Kiss

I didn’t believe in love at first sight,

Until I saw him that winter night.

I dressed up for this dance at school,

He wore elf-ears and acted like a fool.

I didn’t think there was even a chance,

For that boy to ask me to dance.

He was the idol of all the girls,

With his blue eyes and long brown curls.

I passed the night against the wall,

While he danced all over the hall.

With a frown, I began to flee.

But then he was right in front of me.

“Dance with me before you go.” He said.

I was speechless, visions spinning in my head.

He led me out onto the floor.

We danced one time, then once more.

The night was over all too soon,

As this boy’s smile made me swoon.

I looked up and could plainly see,

The mistletoe hung above him and me.

The smile broadened upon his face,

And he tightened our embrace.

He whispered softly in my ear,

“They should hang mistletoe all through the year.

I’ll never forget this Christmas.”

Then we shared our first kiss.

Her

He eyes were shining as she

Stood under that simple plant

Waiting for someone to come past

And sweep her away.

It’s obvious she

Didn’t expect me

To be the one to take notice.

But I did, because

I’d been the one standing under the

Mistletoe waiting last year.

Waiting for someone who never came.

So maybe I’d give

This girl

A chance.

I came closer and at first she didn’t see what

I meant to do. I

Walked over to her.

“Is there a reason you’re out

In the cold on Christmas?”

“I want someone.”

So I gave her someone.

She parted from me and smiled as she walked away.

Obviously she wasn’t looking for me,

Which is too bad.

But I hope I’ve

Made her happier

Somehow.

Mistletoe

It was a classic “accidental meeting under the mistletoe” situation. Jamie and Susie had been friends since they were children, trading red crayons for blue in the first grade, and somehow, through the awkward years of middle and high school, their friendship had endured.

And here they were, young adults now, newly graduated from college and back in their tiny hometown, accidentally standing in the same corner of a too crowded party, underneath a sprig of plastic mistletoe.

Jamie looked at Susie, a warm sparkle in his eyes to match the Christmas lights that bedecked the room. “Hi,” he said softly, taking Susie’s hand in his.

“Hi,” Susie replied, biting her red-glossed lip and leaning into his ugly sweater adorned chest.

“Shall we?” Jamie asked.

“We shall.” And Susie stood on her tiptoes to meet his lips under the mistletoe, remembering briefly all those years when he was shorter than her.

It was a sweet, brief kiss at first, and then as he started to pull away, she tugged at his hand and drew him back down to her, opening her lips for his tongue to slip in as he put his other arm around her and pulled her tight against his chest.

He tasted like Christmas itself, like the memory of the past and the possibilities of the future.

Christmas Kiss

Standing under the mistletoe,

Two people,

Something more than friends,

Wishing to be lovers

Their bodies tremble with anxiety,

Even more so with anticipation

As seconds pass, the two lean closer

Bashful, their cheeks stained cherry red

Finally, their lips meet

The kiss is gentle, beautiful

An explosion of fireworks

Everything they could've imagined

And so much more

A perfect Christmas kiss

Simple Syrup

Simple and sweet

I'm no regular Joe

Sweet like a treat

Under the mistletoe

Our hearts start to flutter

As you gaze in my eyes

A feeling of shudder

Lets give it a try

My hand on your face

A stroke of your hair

What a wonderful place

To be caught in your stare

A feeling of bliss

We both seemed to stir up

And seeled with a kiss

Sweeter than syrup

End of the beginning

Arriving at the door with

ugly sweater adorned

coat taken and pleasantries made

I move about the party as

the minutes fade

Spirits in hand mostly hors d’oeuvres

some tasty and pleasantly devoured

but one - face frozen as the taste hits

my tongue and then a sound

I turn to see where it fits

A blonde, with the sweetest smile

laughing at my misfortune a while

”I should have said something

but wanted to see your face”

And with my drink, I washed the unpleastness

from its place

I smile, praying nothing between teeth

“I really should have said, something..”

She reached for another, and offered,

“here, this one’s better, instead.”

Taking it from her hand, our fingers

lingered, feeling honored

We begin talking, about subjects

most safe, but then she pushes the

discussion, to things unheard of

I smile at her determination

to see if she can rattle, but she finds,

we fit like a glove

For, I push back in the flow of words

She smiles and exclaims, “Why look, mistletoe!”

Her smile is like the sun and I would be remiss

If I did not adhere to traditions of old

So stepping forward, I bend down

and end our beginning with a kiss.

a kiss that we all knew

Keep pushing me in one direction,

where are we going?

you giggle and say nothing.

In an empty corridor,

no one's around,

except for the splashes

of christmas festivity.

Look at me,

but not quite.

Right above me,

a dangerous plant,

the only one not warned to kill

the Norse god,

the one whose death,

sentenced loki to poison,

and his wife to misery.

I say this,

and you look on,

exasperated,

but fond.

Pull me close,

promise me candy

(is this a bribe?)

and kiss me,

with your intoxicating scent.

Flustered and disoriented,

I do the only thing I know,

and follow you.
