I was born on an island in summer. I don't know whether I became a reader because it was my nature, or because it was what I should be

Climate Change

Probing secret hearts

Of ice tells of ocean rising

No longer cool waves

A sudden burst of sun

Weighted against the cold air

The conclusion being me taking a seat in this cold bench

The chill breeze striking my breast

glancing through the waves of brown hair

filling the dead space between glasses and near-sighted eyes

In a courtyard sighting a procession of students - I was one not so long ago

- toting dreams like the backpacks full of books, mid-term papers dangling from shoulders - some more fashionable than others - getting heavier

Man v. Nature: Beauty

Intricacies of a snowflake

the gaps of light in the canopy

are greater architecture than

our skyward follies built upon

the trappings of civilization

that bind us in the sticky strands of duty, honor, compromise

A glorious edifice cannot compare to the sheer fucking majesty

of the humblest wildflower in bloom

a bird in flight

the fog covering the light

hushing everything even sight

I adore the innovation repition revision invention wash cycle

but it cannot beat the

spontaneous burst of the sunrise

or the gradation of sunset into night

Nature creates organically

what we ever reinvent

our own genius impulses

by resenting our bindings

disdaining our ancestors

then eventually resenting our dreams

Drive ourselves forwards to the same spiral

We make beauty contrary to itself every generation

But the sunrise and sunset is always admirable; our settings always dependably pretty

around our cold hard polished diamond selves

Goddamn Piano

There's this goddamn piano

Pinging in my ears

Playing the same things you said without the tears

Counting off the disappointments

in 4/4 time

The melody could be better

But I can't unhear it

Those sticky notes of overdone sadness

Goddamn pianos everywhere

Cycling through the sad notes

You complained that I was insensitive

Had no capacity for tender feeling

And now here I am, beer gone sour,

being critiqued by a schmaltzy piano ballad

That repeats the same goddamn sounds

It sounds like you

(Maybe that's why I've grown to hate the melody)

The kind of song you'd have written about me

If you had any musical talent whatsoever

All long, sweeping, agonizing notes of depressive complaining

Dramatic bitch that you are

Oi! maestro! Turn it off!

People are trying to drink here!

Goddamn piano

Just like you

Can never let a body sit in peace.

Am I O.L.D.?

O the roundness of your spine

Lilting lazy body

Distressed skin

Now you know you're old.
