Aux côtés de Zelenskyy, Biden s'engage à aider l'Ukraine "aussi longtemps qu'il le faudra"

Lors de son premier voyage connu hors d'Ukraine depuis l'invasion de la Russie, le président Volodymyr Zelenskyy a remercié les "gens ordinaires" d'Amérique.

Lors d'une réunion en face à face extraordinaire à la Maison Blanche mercredi, le président Joe Biden a déclaré au président ukrainien Volodymyr Zelenskyy que les États-Unis "resteront avec vous aussi longtemps qu'il le faudra" alors que le pays entre dans ce qui promet d'être un hiver brutal de guerre avec la Russie.

Biden a promis "un soutien sans équivoque et inflexible", affirmant que les États-Unis donneront à l'Ukraine la batterie de missiles Patriot qu'elle a demandée pour contrer les attaques de missiles et aériennes russes et bien plus encore.

'Avatar 2' demuestra que James Cameron tampoco es infalible: por qué 'El sentido del agua' no está a la altura de lo que su director nos había prometido

Que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' va a ser un éxito es algo que prácticamente nadie duda a día de hoy. Ni siquiera el elevado coste de la película de James Cameron va a ser un impedimento para ello. La cosa cambia a la hora de determinar si se trata o no de una buena película. Ahí cada espectador tendrá su propia opinión y en mi caso ha servidor para dejar claro que ni siquiera el director de 'Terminator' o 'Mentiras arriesgadas' es infalible.

Por lo pronto es verdad que 'Avatar' seguramente sea su película que menos me gustaba hasta ahora, pero tenía algo único, presentaba un universo con muchos posibilidades y era un espectáculo visual impresionante. Por ello era más fácil pasar por alto una historia demasiado sencilla para su abultado metraje, pero con 'Avatar 2' había llegado el momento de dar un paso adelante y eso nunca termina de suceder.

El propio Cameron ha reconocido que era muy difícil estar a la altura con 'Avatar 2' y que incluso descartó una primera versión del guion porque no tenía todos los elementos necesarios para ello. Sin embargo, lo que me hacía tener más esperanzas era el hecho de que él mismo destacaba que la historia iba a ser mucho más ambiciosa y que "El objetivo es contar una historia extremadamente absorbente en términos emocionales". Por ahí llega el primer fracaso de 'El sentido del agua'.

Es cierto que en 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' hay más personajes con cierto peso en la historia, pero eso no supone que estén bien desarrollados. Ahí ni siquiera el hecho de que Cameron no escriba en solitario el guion -aquí cuenta con la ayuda de Amanda Silver y Rick Jaffa, el mismo dúo detrás del libreto de 'El origen del planeta de los simios'- ha servido para que los protagonistas tengan gancho.

Ahí la película sufre una alarmante falta de naturalidad e incluso destruyen una de las pocas virtudes de la primera entrega en este punto, ya que esa naturaleza guerrera de Neytiri brilla por su ausencia durante la mayor parte del relato para relegarla al rol de madre preocupada. Lógico por la historia planteada pero totalmente insatisfactorio en su ejecución.

Eso es algo que se acaba trasladando a la propia historia, donde llega un momento en el que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' casi parece un remake encubierto de la primera entrega. Sí, se amplía el mundo de Pandora, tanto en términos sociales como de las criaturas que lo habitan, pero acaba sintiéndose demasiado similar a lo que ya vimos en su predecesora.

Y al final todo acaba reducido a un inevitable enfrentamiento contra los humanos opresores, reincidiendo nuevamente en esa aparente contradicción en la que no deja de caer la saga, ya que por un lado es una celebración de la naturaleza y por otro una fantasía militar. Lo peor de todo en este punto es que 'Avatar 2' acaba sintiéndose como una aventura de transición para preparar la inevitable tercera entrega.

Además, aquí no me vale la excusa de que se trata de un blockbuster y sigue existiendo la necesidad de hacer la historia lo más sencilla posible para no confundir al público. Este mismo año nos ha llegado 'Top Gun: Maverick', una película que ha demostrado que se puede tener un guion sencillito en cuanto a lo que propone pero en el que todo fluye en lugar de atascarse constantemente, que es lo que sucede con 'El sentido del agua'.

Un poco consecuencia de lo anterior es el problema de que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' en ningún caso justifica tener que durar más de tres horas. Y es un grave problema, porque dentro de esos 190 minutos sí que se podría encontrar una emocionante aventura de 2 horas o algo menos.

En eso pensé sobre todo durante el espectacular último acto de la película, en el cual Cameron vuelve a desplegar todo su arsenal para las escenas de acción, demostrando que no hay nadie como él para ello. La pega es que muchos espectadores van a llegar ya agotados a lo mejor de la función y probablemente no disfruten de ello tanto como deberían.

Ahí es también donde Cameron busca que el impacto visual no se coma la parte más emocional, pero ciertas decisiones de guion previas -por ejemplo hay una explicación totalmente delirante para explicar por qué el clan Metkayina había evitado el conflicto hasta ahora- llevan a que se acabe sintiéndose más como una repetición pero a lo bestia de lo que ya vimos en el tramo final de la primera que como una experiencia realmente nueva.

Además, tampoco ofrece tantos estímulos para irse por encima de las tres horas. Ahí también tenemos este año un ejemplo de película de duración similar -apenas tres minutos menos- que logra superarse a sí misma de forma constante y pensando siempre en el disfrute del espectador por encima del mensaje que busca transmitir. Se titula 'RRR'.

El 3D ya no impresiona tanto

Una cosa que Cameron hace de maravilla en 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' es todo lo referente al rodaje de escenas bajo el agua. Nadie se ha acercado ni remotamente al brillante trabajo que hace aquí en ese tipo de escenas, pero es que luego incluso algunas de estas secuencias brillan menos de lo deseable por sus decisiones en lo referente al 3D.

Que 'Avatar' hizo historia con esa tecnología y la puso de moda es innegable, como también lo es que quizá sea aún la película que mejor la ha utilizado. Sin embargo, Cameron no podía limitarse a un más de lo mismo en ese punto y acabó dando con un curioso truco para no tener que sacrificar sus enormes aspiraciones. Ojalá lo hubiera hecho.

El plan de Cameron consistía en utilizar la tecnología HFR para mejorar el 3D en algunas escenas y utilizar una velocidad de 48 fotogramas por segundo, lo cual le obligó a que "en cualquier parte de la escena que queramos a 24fps, simplemente duplicamos los fotogramas". Una solución genial sobre el papel, pero a la hora de la verdad es uno de los factores por los que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' luce peor que su predecesora en este aspecto.

Con eso no quiero decir que 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' no vaya a ser una película importante a la hora de introducir progresos técnicos en el séptimo arte, pero sí que el resultado es muy desigual. Hay momentos en los que resulta una experiencia totalmente inmersiva y te hace creer en la existencia de ese otro universo, pero en otros se aproxima peligrosamente a ese efecto telenovela de algunos televisores que tanto molesta a ciertos espectadores. Sé qué hay un sector del público para el que eso no resulta una molestia, pero yo me encuentro entre los grandes detractores de ello.

Eso lleva a que haya situaciones que te expulsen completamente de lo que sucede en pantalla y doten a 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' de un feísmo visual inesperado. Ahí pudo tener algo que ver la calidad de la proyección a la que asistí yo, pues en ningún caso eran los cines ideales para ello, pero ni siquiera eso justifica esos extraños altibajos. Y en una película en la que prima tanto la experiencia, es un problema importante.

En resumen

Cameron llegaba a 'Avatar: El sentido del agua' con el insuperable aval de haber dirigido dos de las mejores secuelas de la historia del cine. Por desgracia, no podemos decir que aquí haya logrado el mismo hito. Sin ser una mala película, se queda por debajo de su predecesora y al mismo tiempo que deja con curiosidad sobre el futuro de Pandora siembra dudas sobre si realmente queremos seguir volviendo a ese planeta. Esperemos que se quede en un pequeño traspiés antes de poder desplegar todo su arsenal.
