Challenge of the Week #58: You are a victim of injustice, write a story about it. The most masterfully written piece, as voted and determined by the Prose team, will be crowned winner and receive $150. Quality beats quantity, always, but numbers make things easier for our judges, so share, share, share with friends, family, and connections. #ProseChallenge #getlit #itslit

Sufferer

she waits, she waits, she waits for him

all night

no notice of arrival, yet

she still waits

her body imprisoned on the brittle oak chair

her forehead creased with fear

she passes the time counting the crumbs on the floor

counting and counting till her eyes grew

stiff

their rapid radical movements scanning

the rough smudged surface

counting and counting till she got lost in the numbers

her hatred for him weaker than her cowardliness

she flinches when she hears him

his boots a faint tap

each tap speeds her breathing

each tap grows louder

the door opens and her freedom slams shut

she stopped counting the crumbs

now she counts his punches

his kicks

his words, his insults

she gets up from the brittle oak chair

and looks him in the eye

her swollen face swallowing her tears

she starts to scream

for she is done fearing the tapping

and he silences her with one swift blow

Desire

It burns

lighting my insides on fire.

Every sense I once had

gone.

My conscience

has flied out the window.

The only thing

that matters

is you.

Power

Buzzing through my body

Humming along with my heart beat

My finger tips radiate with vibration

My feet craving the speed

The air's strength blinding me

I run

I run

I run

But running never took care of my problems

They made them worse

They grew and soon consumed me

Prose

Words can be spoken

Words can be drafted

They can not be unbroken

Because they already were said

The beauty is in the mind

The beauty lies within the author
