Treading Water

It started with a toe then I dived right in

Or rather I was pushed but from the outside it looked like I'd jumped

It was there I felt the pressure of who I'd become hit me like a wave

Suddenly I had water pouring down my lungs and clashing with bubbles of air like acid

Submerged and struggling I drowned, taking each wave straight on the chin

I was deaf, I was blind, I was present for nothing and held accountable for everything

My consciousness was drawn to one point of awareness

The two parts water, one part oxygen concoction curdling in my lungs keeping me alive

I was coughing up puddles for months, while left to clean up the rest of my personality

Heaving on dry land, I crawled to a cave and recovered in darkness

The pounding waves echoed around my head

Globalised Society

We live in a globalised society

For those who say it's an improvement and result of the developed world and to those who believe that, I ask you to reconsider

There is a gap in our world, a missing puzzle piece and I'll give you a clue to what it is

And it isn't money

We've all noticed but are too afraid to mention it because if we do we risk sounding like someone who pays attention

We're missing something and for the longest time we've been stuffing our notes and coins into a heart shaped hole because some cartoon advertisement with a catchy tune told us to

Our local businesses are losing the race to giant corporations which leaves local mouths empty while the pockets of wealthy businesses grow heavy; somewhere here or somewhere else

Our society is failing because we haven't been paying attention

We're all distracted by someone else's reality, pixelated imitations of life and intimacy but they're not real and we have to keep telling ourselves that

We live in a globalised society where things are manufactured to feel authentic and original but how authentic can it be if it has to be manufactured?

Coffee Shop

She asks me for the wifi password

Why is she asking me?

Why can't she power down for a few minutes without scrolling through memes?

Live for a while without being hunched over a screen

She looks at me expectantly

I don't respond because I'm writing a text

My Reasons

I could like you for shallow reasons

I could like you for the way you wear your hair

I could like you for your tattooed skin

I could like you for the way you think I like you

But I don't

I like the way you smile like you've been caught doing something bad

I like the way smoke curls around your face

I like you for your name and how it suites the way you speak

I like the way we met and the perfectly imperfect story it tells

Hello, nice to meet you

Hey all, I'm the glasseyedgirl and I write poetry about sappy love, crappy love, food, fitness, culture and mental health. I write so I have an outlet because my friends don't get me. I look forward to exploring and expanding my reading through this app and making some new writer friends. I am a writer, that's what I am. Feel free to stop by my page and say hi ✌️

Mothers and Daughters

Go to school and focus on books

Don't focus on boys, don't focus on looks

Graduate and forget about your talents

Just think of how your skills will add to your marriage

But seriously, what an interesting wife you must be, what an interesting life

Don't look at me that way you'll understand when you're a wife

Just wait until you become a mother

But what you really mean is that you wish I'd had a brother

Get your degree but don't get too happy, you're not wearing no string of pearls

Why aren't you married yet? Or are you one of those girls who really likes girls?

That's none of your business, you're fresh out of luck

If you were looking for another way to say I'm a slut

Your friends whisper as they follow

Is it their opinions that you borrow?

Is that ink on her skin stick on or are those actually real?

What will her husband think? How will he feel?

My skin is covered in art, it'll stay if I peal

They breath life into me, these words that I deal

But why pick up a pen when you can whip up a meal?

So put on a white dress, beautiful daughter, be another lamb to the slaughter

Wear your reef of flowers and submit all your powers

Be a dutiful wife, be a dutiful daughter

So you can raise more dutiful daughters

To be beautiful daughters

So just be a dutiful daughter
