John Cougar

“Well, our hearts,

beat like thunder.

I don’t know why

they don’t explode.”

When I was young, my angry father used to say, “Boy! What‘s the matter with you? You got tunes in your head, or something?”

”You’ve got your hands

in my back-pockets,

Sam Cooke’s singin’

on the radio.”

The moments of my life play back to the songs of the day, and the times.

”You say that I’m the boy,

who can make it all come true.

But I’m tellin’ ’ya that I don’t know,

if I know what to do.”

Poetry was invented because stringing rhyming words together made it easier for people to remember them, and to remember a tale, or a legend.

”Say, it’s all right,

hold tight,

we could stay out late,

we could run around all night.

It’s all right,

hold tight,

Well it’s time to go home,

and I ain’t even done with the night.”

The night we met, my wife picked me up in a bar. I was shy. She was not... not at all.

”Well I don’t know

no new come-ons.

No, I don’t know

no smooth lines.”

She was hot, and a little bit older... and a tad tipsy for courage. It was so easy for her.

”I feel the heat

of your frustration.

I know it’s burning you up

deep down inside.”

Putting those poetic words to music made it easier yet for people to remember them,

and you could dance to the words... close... with your hands in my back-pockets.

”You say that I’m the boy,

who could make it all come true.

But I’m tellin’ you that I don’t know,

if I know what to do.”

I guess the “Old Man” was right all along about them tunes in my head, thank goodness.

”Say it’s all right.

Hold tight.

We could stay out late, or

we could run around all night.

All right,

hold tight.

Well it’s time to go home

and I ain’t even done with the night.”

Twenty-five years later those hands still dance in my back-pockets, and that tune is still in my head.

Freckled Ocean

Trade your tea cup of sorrow for a morsel of delight,

Trade your apathetic afternoons for one unblinking night.

With your battle scars and beauty

and your velvet undertone,

Sail, with me, the freckled ocean

and befriend a foe.

All my bright kites of desire tug away all day

and the wind is pulling harder than the will to stay.

Leave the anchor at the harbor

and throw away the chain.

Sail with me, the freckled ocean

past the pier of your pain.

Are you yellow as all butter with your class rings

and your youthful fears expanded like a woman's curves.

Will you birth a better moment?

Will you kiss it on the head?

Sail with me, the freckled ocean

as you rise from bed.

When I find my run,

How will I know?

How will I know?

Will I turn to stone?

Or will I go?

Oh, Oh, Oh

All the grass along the seashore

is bowing in the breeze,

Like the lashes of the bashful down upon their bended knees.

There's the memoir of an elephant

and every tiny seed,

Sail with me, the freckled ocean,

for as long as you need.

Ooooh, Ooooh, Ooooh

Bleeding Out - Imagine Dragons

I'm bleeding out

Said if the last thing that I do

Is to bring you down

I'll bleed out for you

So I bear my skin

And I count my sins

And I close my eyes

And I take it in

And I'm bleeding out

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

When the day has come

But I've lost my way around

And the seasons stop and hide beneath the ground

When the sky turns gray

And everything is screaming

I will reach inside

Just to find my heart is beating

You tell me to hold on

Oh you tell me to hold on

But innocence is gone

And what was right is wrong

'Cause I'm bleeding out

Said if the last thing that I do

Is to bring you down

I'll bleed out for you

So I bear my skin

And I count my sins

And I close my eyes

And I take it in

And I'm bleeding out

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

When the hour is nigh

And hopelessness is sinking in

And the wolves all cry

To feel they're not worth hollering

When your eyes are red

And emptiness is all you know

With the darkness fed

I will be your scarecrow

You tell me to hold on

Oh you tell me to hold on

But innocence is gone

And what was right is wrong

'Cause I'm bleeding out

Said if the last thing that I do

Is to bring you down

I'll bleed out for you

So I bear my skin

And I count my sins

And I close my eyes

And I take it in

And I'm bleeding out

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

I'm bleeding out for you

'Cause I'm bleeding out

Said if the last thing that I do

Is to bring you down

I'll bleed out for you

So I bear my skin

And I count my sins

And I close my eyes

And I take it in

And I'm bleeding out

I'm bleeding out for you (for you)

Like I’m Gonna Lose You - Meghan Trainor featuring John Legend

I found myself dreaming

In silver and gold

Like a scene from a movie

That every broken heart knows

We were walking on moonlight

And you pulled me close

Split second and you disappeared

And then I was all alone

I woke up in tears

With you by my side

A breath of relief

And I realized

No, we're not promised tomorrow

So I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna hold you

Like I'm saying goodbye

Wherever we're standing

I won't take you for granted

'cause we'll never know when

When we'll run out of time

So I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

In the blink of an eye

Just a whisper of smoke

You could lose everything

The truth is you never know

So I'll kiss you longer, baby

Any chance that I get

I'll make the most of the minutes

And love with no regrets

Let's take our time

To say what we want

Use what we got

Before it's all gone

'Cause no, we're not promised tomorrow

So I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna hold you

Like I'm saying goodbye

Wherever we're standing

I won't take you for granted

'Cause we'll never know when

When we'll run out of time

So I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna hold you

Like I'm saying goodbye

Wherever we're standing

I won't take you for granted

'Cause we'll never know when

When we'll run out of time

So I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

I'm gonna love you

Like I'm gonna lose you

This is how

The poetry in music sounds to me

Sometimes it makes sense and thus I feel free.

At times it sounds like a load of gibberish

So I feel out place just like a fish

Out of my depth with the nonsense they spill

I just want to say that I’ve had my fill

Of lyrics which doesn’t mean anything more

Than meaningless rubbish just as a bore

Which switches me off quick as a flash almost as if I’m in a dash

To reconnect with the poetry in music

When people had talent and knew how to use it.

Sometimes you will find a poet once more

Who adds their poetry straight on a score.

So poets out there be not dismayed

For soon once again it’ll be your day

Illenium feat. Bahari - Crashing

[Verse 1]

Intoxicating your kiss

Intoxicating your lips

Nobody does it like this

I find it hard to resist, oh-ooh

Feeling out of control, beautifully so

What's coming over me?

It's a total eclipse of rationality

[Pre-Chorus]

I don't usually say this

I don't usually play this game

Yeah, I know I'm not faded

But it kinda feels that way

I don't usually say this

But I think I should let you know

That baby, baby I don't, I don't wanna go

[Chorus]

How could I go home when I feel like I belong?

In your arms, it's like Champagne

Feel it pouring in my veins

Yeah, I got myself too drunk on you to drive

So I'm crashing here tonight

(Ooh-ooh)

Tonight

(Ooh-ooh)

Tonight (Ooh-ooh)

Oh-oh, so I'm crashing here tonight

Faithfully- Journey

Highway run

Into the midnight sun

Wheels go round and round

You’re on my mind

Restless hearts

Sleep alone tonight

Sending all my love

Along the wire

They say that the road ain’t no place to start a family

Right down the line it’s been you and me

And love in a music man ain’t always what it’s s’posed to be

Oh girl, you stand by me

I’m forever yours

Faithfully.

Heart of a Girl - The Killers

*** when I listen to this song, I think of the love between a father and daughter

Looking out my window

An angel in robes appeared and nearly pulled me apart

A million miles of freedom, a million miles of road,

But I still don't know where to start

She wrote her number down

And she gave it to me

They had to scrape me off the floor

In this transient town, waiters and dealers

Trying to get their foot in the door

That night I called her and she said

"Daddy daddy daddy, all my life

I've been trying to find my place in the world"

And I said to her

"Baby baby babe, I got all night to listen to the heart of a girl"

I can see the time drippin' down the clock,

We've been trying to hear that ancient refrain

It's the one that knows just when our heads are down

And reminds us of the place from where we came

Where we came

"Daddy daddy daddy, all my life

I've been trying to find my place in this world"

"Baby baby babe, I got all night to listen to the heart of a girl"

What happened here, what is this world?

It's too far from the heart of a girl

A ripple in the water

From the drop of a pearl

I'm on the shore waitin'

For the heart of a girl

Many doors, knock on one

Standin' still, time is raging

Staring down the mouth of a hundred thousand guns

And you're still here, you're still here

I believe that we never have to be alone

Yes I believe it's just around the bend

You can hold it in

Or you can scream it on a microphone

There is no end (there is no end)

There is no end (there is no end)

And, deep in the night, I feel the presence

Of something that was long ago told to me

There is a hand, guiding the river

The river to wide open sea

And deep in my heart, in and again

On any mountain, no I'm not afraid

Standing on stone, you stand beside me

And honor the plans that were made
