Quietly light fades and dark intrudes upon my day

Memories haunt the night and chase the sun away

I light the candles on the table set to dine

Flame dances merrily reflecting rainbows on the wine

it bounces light out to the corners of the room

that keeps at bay the darkening sorrows of my gloom

I set soft music playing just our song

it plays I hum, the tune goes on and on

I wait each night for you in candles glow

but the shadows and the candles they all know

that you have to be alive to reappear

and I wait til candles burn to shed my tear

Mirror Memories

I looked into the mirror

and what there did I see

I saw a man of eighty-four

smiling happy back at me

I saw the fun of many times

the wrinkles running tears

memories showed in all its lines

the sad and happy years

and etched behind the mask of fun

I witnessed sadness too

I saw memories of those now gone

and once again I saw you

yes you my lovely darling

in my thoughts you're always near

my wrinkling smile, my bearded chin

no longer in the mirror here

they were pushed aside my lost one

as my memories let you reign

then in present saw my smile once more

As in my heart you should remain

then another face replaced my grin

another reason for the tears

another love taken when she was young

unforgotten through my years.

both faces there in memory

etched in my heart and wrinkled face

then sadness and the pain were wiped

as another took their place

my laughter lines I see again

this old man's beard and grin

as behind my reflection in the glass

I see loves living face walk in.

It was just a challenge

The gods were bored and wanted, needed more to interest our never ending days. One of our games was the cause of the big bang, as you have begun to call it, so we had all these planets to fill and the big god gamblers were offering nubile goddesses and eternal feasting as prizes to come up with creative ways to use these planets for gaming.

I put together a working plan to fill one or two of these rotating asteroids. To begin with, I would set up a factory to produce spirits, souls, give those spirits some sort of conscience, something that us Gods never had.

Make body images of ourselves provide them with an ability to procreate, again something that we gods gave up years ago. Not that we didn't fuck, We were infertile because we live forever and, too many of us, diminishes our lifestyle.

We inserted a spirit into each of the bodies. Saw that they worked here in our heavens, giving them something to strive for, then kicked them onto the empty worlds.

Of course with fertility we had to make them finite and, of course, we left out many of our godly genes but we made them to aspire to be like us.

That was the brilliant stroke of genius that put my plan through and saw me secure forever.

I was hailed as a far thinking god and became God of Earths. There were many Earths across what you call space and there were many chances for huge gambling amongst the gods: wars, people like Trump, becoming leaders, pestilence wiping out huge areas, oceans drying up.

We of course had some sort of control because our factory could modify the spirits as they were collected on the death of their bodies but mostly these worlds ran out of our control. So that our Godly gambling was satisfied.

Pure genius even though I say so myself.

Now you ask for a rewrite and I say in reply, if, I was to do it now with all that we have seen in the many years and all the comforts I now have, I

...

would not change a thing.
