i wake up with your voice in my head

just one word: my name, steeping with teasing familiarity

i remember it always being scratchy, traveling through telephone lines across states, yet right in my ear, pressed tight when you would get sleepy and soft

and now, my room feels unfamiliar

making coffee seems off

i'm sitting at my desk, frozen, trying my best to reverse this maniacal time machine that controls my dreams

i ask you what your favorite thing is and you say “the dark” i say you must be pretty happy right now you kiss me i feel your breath heave your hands shake you’re calling me beautiful your teeth graze my upper lip and i haven’t been.. i almost forget that i’ve put a mask of him in front of you and it’s all pretend and i almost forget that your voice isn’t the same timbre your smile isn’t quite crooked enough and i can almost feel him in my arms as i breathe in and out. in, out. just like i remembered
