Beasts of Battle

Killing took some men.

Death carried them off;

Bore them over the high helm.

Came then three beasts of battle

One, a white wolf with fang and claw,

Dragged the dead away hungrily.

Another, a veracious vulture,

Pecked at a bodiless armoured arm.

The third was a mounted man

High above the fallen foes,

His smile a bloodied, satisfied slash.

The man rode over the remains,

Travelled back to his humble house.

His children clung to their father,

His wife, not widowed, cried for joy.

And the slaughterer smiled again

Held his family, happy to be home.

Rat Race

She lived as she had died -

Quietly. So silently she slipped

Away. And only one cried -

From guilt more than loving,

The lying man she'd loved.

Run the little rat race -

Run. Pitter, patter, haste,

When the wheel's broken

Fix another in its place.

There is a violent

Emptiness. That lingers deep

Within. As if life is still -

Waiting - to begin.

We are dusted with

Time. Past into the mind.

Here now - but left behind.

At some other corner

Of the maze, confined.

Death is not tragedy -

Only a final release,

Life is what is tragic

And the aftermath - peace.

Live Forever

We'll live forever

Under the moon,

Live forever

Until half past noon.

Let an eternity pass

We'll stay the same,

Unless we die tomorrow

Without fame.

Unending us

We spiral round,

An eternity wrapped

Below the ground.

Flowers grow above

As down we delve,

The sun starts setting

At one past twelve.

Let it tick on

From now ’til then,

Live forever

And do it again.

Polyhymnia

Polyhymnia had no more time for

Rhyme. Wanted no more structured

Odes. ‘Freedom in chaos,’ she told her

Sisters. Grecian muses who oversaw an

Eon of poetry – long since dead.
