Game of Thieves.

This game isn't just a game-every Thrae felt that now.

Ever since that moment, when the Seer announced the beginning of the games, the markings of a new era, people flocked to the gates, hoping-begging-for an entry.

Twenty-five people were chosen, twenty-five, no more, no less.

Twenty-five Thrae exited the gates.

Twenty-five returned.

Perhaps you thought the returning number would be different. Well, you're not wrong, in a way. Twenty-five people came back.

Completely changed.

The noisy ones arrived home-silent and still. The soft-spoken, returned loud and rather obnoxious. The weak were now strong.

The beautiful became hideously ugly.

The kind became bitter.

And the silver eye-every one of them were marred with one silver eye replacing their right. One silver eye that seemed to bore into you whenever one of them would fix their eyes on you.

People drew back from the gates after the Returning-terrified. The twenty-five Thrae left the gates, and on their return, they had one piece of their personality sliced away, and another sewn on.

Some called it the Game of the Changed.

Some simply called it the Game of Opposites.

But to most, it's known as the Game of Thieves. No one is certain how the name was attached, but it fit, and stuck like glue.

So, I understand you have wish to join the games, and I respect that, but there is something you need to know.

This isn't a game to blindly throw your life into.

Unless, of course, you know how to survive.

shattered.

cowering from words,

seeking desire.

aching for warmth,

you’ve been burned by the fire.

sunshine dances outside,

but you’re here behind bars.

the world sprouts into bloom,

but you’re up with the stars.

fighting a war,

frozen in time,

stone to the core,

lost in the rhyme.

flames in the mind,

ice in the heart.

you swear you will end this

if it tears you apart.

She Ran Through Life

Why is she running through life

Like it’s a racetrack?

If she pushes herself any harder,

Will she crack?

What is she running from?

What is she hiding?

Why is she running?

What is she fighting?

She needs to slow down,

Because when her run is over,

She will realize,

She did nothing with her life.

Should've slowed down, she will say.

Should've stopped, taken a look around,

But now there’s a price to pay.

She took the wrong path,

She went the opposite way.

There used to be time to turn back.

Fix the crack.

But she’s done now-

She’s finished.

There’s nowhere left to go.

the curtains have drawn,

No one’s got time to lend.

And unfortunately for her-

It’s the end.

Fading

He stretched out a shaking hand, gently stroking a lock of my hair behind one ear. Salty tears slowly streaked down my cheeks, trickling onto his hand, mixing with his blood.

“Don’t leave me. Please don’t leave me.” I whispered, my shoulders shaking.

“Don’t cry.” He breathed, clutching my hand in his own, his breath coming out in quick rasps. His icy blue eyes were marred with pain.

“I-I'm so sorry.” I choked, the trickle of tears increasing too a stream. “I did this. I did this.”

“It’s not...your...fault.” The distance between his words scared me. I clutched his hand tighter. “I-I was the monster. I brought this on...myself.”

“Stop. You’re waisting strength. Help will come soon.” My voice cracked, and I began to sob as the light in his eyes began to dull. “You have too be alright. I need you too be alright!” I screamed.

His grip on my hand loosened, and I knew.

He was gone.

Missing ~ not able to be found because it’s not in its expected place ~

i miss you.

and i don’t understand.

you were here,

holding my hand.

but now you’re not,

where did you go?

you were all i got.

i want you here.

with me.

why did you disappear?

why did you leave?

are you gone forever?

should i grieve?

but, i suppose,

i will keep watching the door,

hoping, just maybe,

we can go back to before.

i just wanted you to know,

i won’t stop watching,

maybe you’ll show.

i won’t stop believing

you’ll come home to me.

home to stay.

home to be.

and,

i just wanted you too know,

that she really misses you.

a lot.

and i miss you too.

Challenge
Twist Ending in 50 words or less.
In such a short amount of words it is hard to tell any story. See if you can write a story that sets expectations and subverts them in the word limit. Change the genre from horror to funny or the opposite. Or trick the reader into believing there is something there is not and reveal it in the last line. Surprise us. Here is an example of a short story by Hemingway: For sale: baby shoes, never worn.

Awoken

“Mommy?”

I slowly turned toward the voice, cracking open my eyes to peer at the little figure who was disturbing my sleep.

“Mommy, the storm is scary.”

I blinked a few times, staring at the little girl standing by the door.

But...I don’t have a child.
