Your Gift of Words

Your Words Gift Wrapped

I found a package on my doorstep,

while trying to remember if I needed

to let the dog out again, only to realize

that I have cats not dogs and they

are the indoor variety. Nevertheless,

there was the box wrapped in an old

Monet print that you had discarded

for some unknown reason. I carefully

peeled back the tape, thinking maybe

I could rescue and rehang the print.

What a surprise! Inside the box,

carefully chosen I imagined, were

the words you had long ago decided

to gift to me when you thought I was ready.

While I do appreciate your thoughtfulness,

I do not yet know if I am ready to put

these wonderful syllables into their proper

syntax and regift them to you, like

a holiday white elephant present,

I might have discarded- save for

an occasion just like this one.
