Grandpa

We can rewrite everything

scribble over words

that never belonged to us.

We can erase his clumsily crafted handprints

pink rubber moving back and forth

until graphite flees.

We can hold his yellowing photos

smear the ink with our fingers

until only you and I are left.

Candles

Look at you

blowing out your own candle

the flame fading in cadence

with the arctic words

slipping

            off

                  your

                          tongue.

When was the last time

you struck a match

for anyone else?

The only warmth

you ever shared

was kindled in your belly.

I would hand you my candle

but you’d blow that out too.

Things That I Am

I am a

kitchen table loiterer

juniper tree sneezer

disciple of toasty sun spots

curing cold blues from winter.

Circus (Welcome to The Show)

Runaways now wrangling tigers

Queens of their own destinies decide

Tight ropes are safer than pencil skirts

To My Father’s Whiskey

What’s more painful:

Holding on or letting go?

I ask my father

While he sips whiskey.

My words are wasted;

The brown liquid says something

Far more interesting.

He has no need for

Unnecessary questions;

The addition of vibrato

To his song of simple notes

Following the tune:

She lies

He drinks

She cries

He drinks more

A rhythmic cutting

Of weeds above their

Roots reverberates

Through the garden.

I tell my father

While he sips whiskey

Nothing is more painful

Than dull music

And half assed yard work.

Growth

The apple fell

Undeniably far from the tree

For the first time in years

And rolled somewhere in between

Dismay and delight.

Carry

Her hair fell thick and raven black

Down her neck, onto her back

Such a shame, what a waste

All those men who made such haste

Traveling from across the sea

To use what they could find.

Wash their hands when they are done,

Nothing to it, just for fun.

Such a shame, what a waste.

Raven hair and pretty face,

Carries water from the sea

With strength that she could find.

10 p.m.

Standing in the kitchen,

Our legs drowsy,

Words cascade from our mouths

Like coffee into porcelain cups.

We solve the mysteries of the universe

With puzzle pieces.

We decide what is God

And if trees falling in forests mean anything at all.

Recidivist

Society emerged in a hurry

As if whipped by a riding crop.

Spurs dug deep for the carrot on the stick.

The sun was welcomed by unmasked faces

Trotting tumultuously towards each other.

Caution was thrown to the wind

With retired masks and gloves.

They were only temporary anyway

Like a cast over mending bone.

Animals returned to their hideaways.

Green grass became flip flop flattened

Once more.
