I can see the bond between us, that twisting, tangling mass that tied us together. I wasn't sure where he started or I began but I knew the moment they started to torture him. The screams that ripped from my lips were bone jarring and that living entity that was Us turned a shade of red so deep it was a wonder I kept my sanity at all.

The Fourth Time

This is the fourth time that I stare longingly at you from behind the frosted pane of glass. Your fingers are wrapped around a steaming mug of hot chocolate, just like they were the three times before. You flip a page in “The Great Gatsby,” a favorite of mine with that tantalizing green light. I had not noticed that my fingers were wrapped around the door handle to that small coffee shop. I released the cool metal and with one last look, I turn away. Just as I had the three times before.
