The Void in You

With decomposing irises

You looked me dead in the eyes

And I saw everything I needed to

When I saw nothing at all

The windows of your soul,

Blue curtains drawn apart,

Lead to an overwhelming emptiness

The same kind I suddenly felt within me

As panic seeped into my being

That’s the point when I started

To catch on, to catch cold

An encroaching illness, a fever

Creeping up

Synching up

With my unwilling suspicion

I can’t believe

I believed someone

Who was lying

On their deathbed

Trying to bury me in their place

What I Learned at the Lake

Back and forth

Back and forth

Waters sway

Anxious

Indecisive

Back and forth

Back and forth

I go

Between you

And sanity

Like water, I settle

Challenge
Change your genre
Write something in a genre you normally avoid or rarely use. Romance, horror, mystery, mild erotica, comedy/humour, factual, sc-fi, fantasy... anything! I've set the word limit to 550 max as I like to read all entries to my challenges, but I have other things to do, too. If possible, add a brief explanation, either in the main body of the piece or in your comments section. I hope you enjoy this challenge. Poetry or Prose...

A Sonnet for Homework

I forgot about homework, yes truly

Then remembered, but forgot once again

I’m surprised how poor mem’ry, it threw me

To a panic, yet I managed to pen

One quatrain while I sang in the shower

A few more lines while I combed through my hair

A couplet while crying in rush hour

And some more rhymes that I plucked from thin air

Should my sonnet be filled with delusions

Or brimming over with loves sad and true

I’m not sure, but I’ll tie up the loose ends

I mean, it’s just homework I’ve got to do

Hey, look, everyone! Ten beats ’til we’re done!

Ten, nine, eight, seven, five, four, three, two, one

A Different Kind of Hurt

Paper cuts sting

To remind us that we’re alive

Scrapes heal

But leave a faint memory of the story

So we remember to tell it

But when a soul shatters

It’s a miracle if we’re alive

There’s a chance we’ll never heal

Because all we can do is hide our story

And pray to forget it
