Gaea

In Chaos it began,

and in Chaos it will end.

I was created by Chaos,

birthed of a cosmic egg

by the space goddess

of primordial fog and mist.

Gaea: the earth

and mother of all that is in it.

In three marriages,

(what of love?)

I birthed sky and sea,

Gigante and mortals of my flesh.

My children rise up

and call me blessed

except the husband-son, Uranus,

companion created first.

I was young and lonely.

Nothing lived on me,

no one suckled at my broad breasts.

He threw about me

a starry coat of dark warmth

and we joined together.

Still, before the creation of time,

he grew lusty and cruel.

He embraced me in shackle arms,

imprisoning Titan god-children

in my wide womb,

until Cronus birthed himself

through blood and sickle,

then brought the others forth.
