There's an idea in folklore that says you should never answer a voice calling your name unless you can see who is speaking. Why not? What will happen to you? Who or what will you see or hear? Write a piece of flash fiction based on this folkloric idea. Be as creative as you like and feel free to use traditional folklore or make up your own completely new ideas. Feel free also to explore hybrid genres and to stray from mainstream paranormal themes.

the voice in the wood

I was strolling through the park one day. It had been awhile since anyone had come here after the disappearance of a few poor children. It had been months since they were last seen anand everyone was frightened. However with gas prices sky high and my work and apartment literally a park view away I figured I'd not drive the car the 10 mile traffic filled streets and parkinglots to get to work. It was kind of spooky being the only one in the park the swings making creeking sounds from not being oiled in months. It was almost like a horror movie I even thought someone said my name "arrrthhhurrrr... arrrthhhurrrr". Damn imagination running away with me. Must be all the stress from work piling up. "Arthhhhhurrr Merrrrlllyyyynnn". I turn around eyes wide to see no one there. I laugh someone from work must be trying to prank me. Those jerks and there pranks. I yell " the jigs up guys Marty? Nick? Or Sanchez I know it's one of you!" Silence. I turn around and keep walking and then..."Arrrtttthhhhhuuuuurrrrr....Arrrrrtttthhhuuurrrr....Aaaarrrrttthhhuuuurrrr MeeeerrrrrrlllllyyyynnnnMeeeerrrrrrlllllyyyynnnn!!!" I fed up yell " What? What?!What!!!!" Boom a blinding light a giggle and then nothingness. The search lasted 10 years with a lot of suspects but no arrests. Like all the other disappearances the police were dumbfounded. Eventually the town gave up searching and the city ordered the park closed and dismantled but after the disappearances of the foreman and a few of the workers it was eventually roped off and left to rust. Not that they needed to bother with the rope no one was dumb enough to go near the park.
