Granted

"Be careful what you wish for." That's how the saying goes. Around me this is especially true. I have a very (un)desirable superpower. I manifest any wish simply by hearing it. I have no control over it. It's like breathing to me. It started when I was a child around 2 and my mother, in her frustration one day, wished my father was dead...and then he was...just...keeled over on the couch with a blank stare up at the ceiling.

Now, that was a big wish you could claim is a coincidence but it's also the small things. My brothers and sisters would wish for a certain toy and somehow it would appear like a blink in the wind. Whatever it was would suddenly be at their feet. It wasn't long before they realized I was basically magic. You can imagine what my childhood was like. You might think it was fantastic...all the wishes in the world were granted. But over time wishes made in jest or idle chatter around me came with serious ramifications.

So now I spend most of days avoiding people. My family especially. I don't hear from them too often unless they really want something. In that case I'll get a voicemail in the middle of the night with a single wish. It's never a"Hello," or "I love you"...just..."I wish I had a vacation home in Maui, Thanks."

I can't complain too much though...I really love having an island in the Bahamas all to myself.
