my mother’s broken daughter

i tell my mother that i think,

when i’m old and grey,

i’ll regret wasting

my most beautiful and tragic years

loving broken men

who were not ready to love me.

and she says simply,

“damage attracts damage”

she means well but, her eyes are tainted with worry

for the daughter that she’s on the verge of losing
