I Knock But No One Answers

The road is the same as it was

when I lived across from the old farm couple.

I turn in their driveway and walk up to the house.

I knock but no one answers.

I turn to leave but the door slowly opens.

I enter and see a variety of hallways

and rooms connected to rooms.

I am confused until a white light appears.

It says, “You’re not supposed to be here.”

I close the door and leave.

Later that day I’m talking to my son.

I tell him about my dream.

He squints his eyes and tilts his head.

“Have you heard the news?”

“No.”

“That old couple died

in a car accident

at 6:00 this morning.”
