Freedom
You shoved me off a boat with a smile.
I laughed and dragged you in with me.
Somebody was frowning at us,
and the counselor was telling us to behave.
We didn’t care.
I had an abandoned beer can kozy
tucked into my pocket
and you were holding the wrapper
of a storebought ham sandwich
you had seen floating.
The sun was warm,
the water was cool;
we closed our eyes
and just floated,
free.
