Anything

"What would you do to keep me?" His voice pressed into me, as gentle as his kisses. My reply came immediately, "Anything." It was the right thing to say and he smiled down at me. His eyes sparkling with love, desire, and remorse. He pressed another of his gentle kisses to my neck before pulling away, "I know." The words were faint, barely a murmur, but the finality echoed in my heart like thunder. There was nothing I could do to retrieve myself from his heart and there was nothing he would do to erase himself from mine. I watched him as he left the room, my heart dancing into the night with the man I'd given my soul to.

I remained where I was in bed for only a moment longer. There was no room in my mind for regret, I had a task to accomplish. I would make my revenge worth everything as the ability to exact it had just cost me all I had left. I felt my soul fade from the earth and I knew our deal had begun.
