Dark

pulls me under

feels like I’m dying

beating

the harsh surface of cold

unforgiving

unyielding stone

breath--more like freedom

breaking the surface

gulping

for just a moment

back under

the dark consumes me

again

blue

an ethereal thing

black

like the creatures of nightmares

light

bright above me

it doesnt last

for longer than a moment

back under the blackness

again

they crash around me

it shouldn’t hurt like this

they told me

it should be quick

they told me

it’s like falling asleep

I made a mistake

letting the freefall

of those precious seconds

consume me

I thought

an instant

that’s all it takes

but the blackness

at the base of the cliff

it has decided

to take its time

not quickly at all
