THE CAGE

There's a war in my head.

Can you hear it—the rattle

of spirit on skull? My mind

is restless, see. It's been alone

too long in this flesh-bag,

its only solace a paltry

communion—one of words

on paper, of oil on canvas, of

stage-silhouettes and fingerpads

on string and ivory and brass.

And my body? It mourns, too,

decries all of this sleeping

with feet off the ground,

deprivation of earth's warmth

at the behest of a dreaming soul.

Each other's agony, hostage-taker,

prison-mate, all they share

is a longing to be free.
