Tombstone

We write "Rest in Peace" for you.

It is selfish to want to bring you back,

To want the smiling person we are used to

Even if you cry yourself to sleep at nights.

We say "Rest in Peace" for you.

Tears hanging in our eyes,

And falling on dying roses

Atop a dark, wooden casket.

We sing "Rest in Peace" for you.

The dirt is covering your casket,

And the last images of you, smiling,

Are beginning to fade away.

We sob "Rest in Peace" for you.

We take the roses, and walk back,

Get in our cars silently,

Leaving you to rest.

We pray "Rest in Peace" for you.

Despite knowing you are at the golden gates,

Being welcomed by our Creator,

It lets us rest in peace.

We lie, and say "Rest in Peace"

Though you should know that if you could,

We would welcome you back in a heartbeat

With happy tears, hugs, and jokes.

We used to ask you, beg you, to return,

But you can't return, so we beg you to peacefully rest.
