The rhythm and the rhyme

It's the rhythm and the rhyme, the meter and the stance

And the poet is the caller as she calls her words to dance.

Sometimes it's a waltz, dancing stately across the paper

Sometimes it's a jive man, or other madcap caper.

Sometimes it's a salsa in the heat of the night

Sometimes it's a ballet and your heart takes flight.

But it's the rhythm and the rhyme, the meter and the stance

and the poet is the caller as she calls her words to dance.

Sometimes they tell a story some never ending tale

Or give you a voice when your own begins to fail.

Sometimes they simply tell you that its all been done before

And a hundred thousand people have danced upon this shore.

But it's the rhythm and the rhyme, it's the meter and the stance

and the poet is the caller as she calls her words to dance

Sometimes they catch a feeling like freshly fallen snow

Or the leaves turning red as the cold winds blow.

But a thousand stanzaed epic or a short sweet haiku

The words line up and dance as the poet tells them to.

It's the rhythm and the rhyme, it's the meter and the stance

and the poet is the caller as she calls her words to dance.
