The Two of Us

You touched my hand

in the pouring rain

and I felt such need for you,

overwhelming me.

We had only met

two glorious days ago

but I knew in my heart

we would be together

for the rest of our lives.

You put your arm

around me as

you protected me

from life

and we entwined

as one person

understanding that

the other

must be an individual

and yet

would be and do

what was best

for us both.

The sexuality was hot

and passionate

but there was more

than that -

we cared for each other

and wanted the other

to thrive and keep

their uniqueness, and

develop their talents,

achieving their wants

and ambitions.

And now, my heart breaks

and I cry, alone,

when you aren’t looking,

as I see your illness

take big chunks of you,

swallowing your strength

and robbing me of you,

little by little.

But still, I feel the same

as in the beginning,

as we remain,

loving one another,

just you and I,

the two of us.
