Challenge of the Week #55: Write a story of 200 words or more about a stranger. The most masterfully written piece, as voted and determined by the Prose team, will be crowned winner and receive $200. Quality beats quantity, always, but numbers make things easier for our judges, so share, share, share with friends, family, and connections. #ProseChallenge #getlit #itslit

You take your first breath.

It's golden and shines in the air of prosper and life. Tired eyes with auspicious smiles stare down at you. You can't smile back. Not yet - you don't know how.

Your knees land their first fall. You've failed to walk. Too young to know wrong. Disappointment. You stand again. Those felicitous smiles of the giants stalking you never waver.

Your first heartbreak. It seeps into your pores like ink you never washed away. Rejection feels heavy on your tongue. On your soul. You swallow. It's faded. It never goes away.

You take your first train ride. Back to your new apartment where you live alone. Your eyes are surrounded by fatigue from the stress of the day. Weighing you down. Your attempt at a moment of respite is broken by the black-horned beasts spitting venom over the fragility of your mind.

You're alone again. The alcohol in the back of the cupboard whispers your name in sequacious syllables. A vindictive numbness consumes you. Panic maximises the proximity of your walls. In vastness, you shrink.

Darkness.

You weep.

You sob.

No one is smiling at you now.

You take a breath.

A part of you hopes it's your last one.
